The LGBT’s fight for human rights and equality has come a long way, and the movement has gained increasing momentum since the Stonewall Riots. The Transgender Day of Remembrance every Nov 20 is a way to commemorate those who have fallen protecting the basic human right to live just like everybody else. Since then, a deviation in the normal or “general” sexual orientation is rarely considered a mental health issue or a precursor to one anymore. They are now being given the same civil rights to marry, and even to adopt children among other things.
But despite such efforts to strike a common ground in the face of disparity and striking differences, looming questions still remain. Here are some of them:
1. Mental Stability
Many studies show that LGBT individuals have a higher risk of suffering from mental and emotional problems, such as suicidal tendencies, major depression and anxiety disorder, as compared to their heterosexual counterparts. Most of the research also added that this is attributable to prejudice, social stress and exclusion that gays usually experience.
Although in terms of self-esteem, the American Psychological Association (APA) has published findings that heterosexuals and lesbians seemingly possess similar levels, it did not negate the fact that many LGBTs still suffer from higher incidents of mental disorder.

The APA however, during it’s annual meeting stated that “homosexuality is not an illness and therefore not in need of a cure.” Other similar organizations have also taken a supportive stance against LGBT discrimination, and reparative therapy that seeks to change a child’s sexual orientation. Psychologists particularly have been given a strict guideline wherein the practice of psychotherapy should only be used in such a manner that “gay men and lesbians can become comfortable with their sexual orientation and understand the societal response to it.”
Be that as it may, much is still left to be known, as far as scientific research is concerned, about the actual mental health of an LGBT populace, in the absence of a homophobic or transphobic environment, which points to a more stable mental outlook that thoroughly debunks those that state otherwise.
